The annual Beanie Affair was initiated by local textile artist Allison Nye in 2012 to raise awareness of local textile artists, and to show that they and their works deserved better than dismissal to 'nanna' status. With today's yarns, colours and techniques, our skilled textile artists are up there with the best of artists using other media.
We wanted to provide a platform for the exhibition and sale of work produced by local artists, and for them to obtain a fair price for those works. It is also a place for artists to meet and be inspired by each others' work.
The Beanie Affair is also proud to participate in the promotion and preservation of our rural neighbours in the wool industry through the use of wool and its fabulous properties. Hand spun yarn is included at the event alongside the beanies and other items.
It is well documented that knitting and crochet are beneficial for well-being at any age; doctors will often suggest it for those who are stressed or sick. Classes and knitting lounges are offered at various venues around town during the Beanie Affair, from beginners to master class workshops for men, women and children.
In an exciting development, the Beanie Affair is travelling to London in 2017, after which it will relocate to Bendigo, with a new venue and audience, a longer exhibition time and more entries. Details to be updated as they come to hand.
